Mod Mini Skirt Project: Neon Mod Flowers

Okay, yet another installment in the mod mini skirt project! Made, of course, with Simplicity 7699 from 1968.

This time I used a vintage spandex blend, probably a poly/spandex blend. The fabric was purchased on Etsy from the seller "iheartlace."

I love how the fabric features neon mod flowers but the colorfulness is tempered by the black background color. The flowers are in the very classic mod-shape that was popular at the time.

At some point during this mod mini skirt project, I did buy a new sewing machine. I just wasn't happy with the clunky operation of my machine and the fact that my machine came with so few bells and whistles. I ended up upgrading to the Janome Sewist 500, which is a mid-priced machine. The machine operates much smoother than my previous one and has some features my previous machine lacked. New features : thread cutter, stretch stitch, clear window so you can see when your top-loaded bobbin is running out, and even a stitch that emulates that of a serger. I haven't been courageous enough to try the serger stitch and a few other more complicated features, but I will soon.

All for now.

Happy sewing!
Astrid

  6. @Kerilynn: Thanks! I think you'll enjoy the online fabric buying experience. At first I thought it would be difficult not getting to see the fabric up close and to feel the texture, but I've found that good fabric descriptions by reputable sellers help out a lot.

    @kiwibubbles: Thanks so much! I will be posting frequently : - )

  7. Hello there :)
    I adore your blog and your sewing passion. Your outfits are really cute, but there is one comment I would like to make. You should really try to leave your hems a few centimetres longer and a slightly more A-line shape.- I think it would get more authentic 60-ish look. Yes, your legs are gorgeous and no wonder you want to show them off, but i think sometimes it is nice to leave a bit more to imagination. But as I said I love to follow your blog, well done. Just take it as a friends advice, dont want to offend :)

  8. Your embodiments are rather harmonious. Super color.

  9. @kkatushka: I appreciate the advice. I'm not offended or anything. I actually do think the length and shape are right though. Perhaps the pictures are misleading because my shirt covers up the top of the skirt. The top of the skirt (which is covered up by shirt) is quite narrow and then the bottom flares out to make an A. When it comes to length, I find anything much longer swamps my frame. I'm not really trying to show off my legs-- it's actually the body part I like the least! Thanks for the comment and advice though : - )

    @bg-booms: Thanks!

  10. @kkatushka: P.s. I did find a way to make my skirts look more retro. It doesn't involve the actual sewing process but I'll be sharing it soon. Thanks again for your readership : - )

  11. All your skirts are fabulous - but this mod flower print...wow.

    And I agree with you. This is a mini skirt and the length and shape is just perfect, if you ask me :-)

    Hugs from a fan of yours.

  13. I've been seeing your posts on sew_retro for some time now. They make me miss my sewing machine so much! I like to sew the same kinds of skirts with funky retro fabrics. I know I have no right to just come out here and critique you, but every time I see you post it really frustrates me that all the shots are from such a high-up angle. Of course, it is very flattering for you, but it makes it really hard to see the shape of the skirt. And you're very pretty as it is, so no need to do that with the camera! I know it is just a little thing, but it really irks me because I want to see the SKIRT! :)

  14. No offense taken-- here's the problem, though. My husband is 6'4" and he's over a foot taller than I am. Of course, his angles are going to be from a high-up position, because he's so much taller. I can't make him crouch either, because he's always bitching that it hurts his legs to crouch. So, I can't really help the angle because it's very difficult to take photographs of oneself. Sorry about that.

  15. And P.S. glad to be an inspiration! I hope I continue to be one : - )
